Here was the starting rotation this year:
1) Wainwright (until injured)
2) Looper
3) Lohse
4) Wellemyer
5) Pinero
We filled in with Boggs, Thompson, Mulder (all 16 pitches), Parisi, and Garcia. Looking at this group, and taking nothing away from them, it is amazing we have stayed in the race this long. That is a lot of injuries to key guys, especially Carpenter, Wainwright, Mulder, and Clement!
With that being said, what is the rotation going to look like next year? Here is my take:
1) Carpenter - If he is healthy, we have one of the best in baseball.
2) Wainwright - The kid looked tough before he got hurt
3) Lohse - we have to find a way to get this done!
4) McClellan - They have him on "the Wainwright plan" supposedly, with him going back into the rotation next year.
5) ????
There is a lot of hype around Garcia. Do you trust him in the 5th spot? He is a lefty, and he has good stuff. What about Boggs? He pitched well briefly with the big club. I think he would be good in a late season trade this year, or possibly really good out of the pen next year, ala McClellan. He has a good arm. Wellemeyer has been pretty good this year. I could see him getting another shot, especially if he finishes the year strong. What if Clement is healthy? He is a former All Star, and Duncan has a history of reviving guys late in their career (Woody Williams, Lohse, Wellemeyer). Then again, he could be another guy always injured (Mark Mulder).
The Cardinals are going to have some money to spend. Do they use that in the free agent Market, and go after a front of the rotation guy? Ben Sheets and CC Sabathia, among others, are both going to be free, and cost a lot of money.
I think if you run out a rotation of Carpenter, Wainwright, Lohse (he will cost a pretty penny) and McClellan we can afford to go with one of our own guys (preferably Wellemeyer or even Garcia) in that 5th spot. With this rotation, our top 3 are potentiall (if healty) as good as anybody in the National League. This will save us enough money to go out and sign a closer if we have to. The bullpen should be pretty solid, and with Izzy coming off the books, we'll have the money to go after a good closer if Chris Perez isn't ready.
I know it's too early to start looking towards next year, but the way the Cubs and Brewers are playing right now...... we may only have another week or two to think about this year. Thoughts and opinions?
